Mental Health Summit I
CSUSB Palm Desert Campus

March 27, 2012

The Coachella Valley Health Collaborative hosted a summit at the Cal State San Bernardino Palm Desert Campus to discuss reducing mental health stigma on Tuesday, March 27.

This free summit took place in the campus’s Indian Wells Theater from 9 a.m.- 3:30 p.m. where lunch will be provided. The CSUSB Palm Desert Campus is located at 37-500 Cook St.

The summit was primarily designed for individuals involved in the delivery or receipt of services.

Attendees discussed ways to implement a local campaign to reduce stigmas related to mental illness and develop ideas on how to increase services for those who need them.

The summit keynote speaker was former Palm Springs Mayor Ron Oden, who discussed mental illness and its stigma based on his personal experience with his former wife.

Dr. Glen Grayman, president, Health Assessment Resource Center, presented statistical data on the current situation regarding mental health issues and access to mental health services.

Four panelists presented at the summit:

Dr. Jill Gover with the LGBT Community Center of the Desert discussed a “Program to Encourage Active and Rewarding Lives for Seniors.”

Traci Miller and Justin Palicki with AdEase Company discussed the “It’s Up To Us” media campaign in Riverside County to reduce mental illness stigma, and

Perla Ray, therapist with Family Services of the Desert discussed Cognitive-Behavioral Interventions for Trauma in Schools.

Attendees participated in four breakout sessions in the categories of Latinos, LGBTQ, seniors, and youth. The sessions collected brain-storming information to be used in the development of a strategic plan to reduce mental health stigma and increase access to mental health services. Facilitators for these sessions included Ana Stockwell, RN counselor, College of the Desert (Latinos); Terry Gock, director, Asian Pacific Family Center (LGBTQ); Ed Walsh, Riverside County Office on Aging (seniors); and Steven Oppenheimer, Oasis Community Services (youth).

“I am very excited about the opportunity for Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus and the CVHC to increase the public’s awareness for the need for mental health services and prevention programs in the Coachella Valley,” said Gary Jeandron, CVHC project director. “The funds from Riverside County will also assist the CVHC in developing a public awareness campaign to reduce shame, which is often associated with mental illness.”

Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus, on behalf of the Coachella Valley Health Collaborative, received funding from Riverside County to focus on early intervention in mental health issues.

The collaborative is planning a second summit in October, designed to bring the region’s residents and service providers together to help residents begin to identify the services that are available for those who need them.

The collaborative’s goal is to increase the desert region’s access to mental health services by identifying gaps in services and developing a strategic plan to increase service levels.

Coachella Valley’s Healthy Menu for Change

On September 18th, 2009, the Coachella Valley Health Collaborative, in partnership with the Resource Center for Nonprofit Management, presented a one-day summit at the Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino. The purpose of the conference, titled “Coachella Valley’s Healthy Menu for Change,” was to provide a “thought-provoking and solution-focused forum on hunger and its impact on the Coachella Valley.” Keynote speakers included Dr. Glen Grayman, President, Health Assessment Resource Center (HARC) and Kenneth Hecht, Executive Director, California Food policy Advocates (CFPA).

The event was funded in part by a grant from the California Wellness Foundation, with additional support from the Desert Health Care District, Regional Access Project (RAP) Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, Eisenhower Medical Center, and the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG). Non-profit organizations and healthcare professionals all around the Coachella Valley were encouraged to attend.
